And two a genius tool has been developed by the plucky germans to to let Urban Planners Visualize Traffic, Noise, And Pollution. According to the Global Mail when complete the development will resemble: …a reproduction of the sort of historic, chic downtown neighbourhoods you find in the far more central parts of London or Paris, not in this distant expanse of former dockyards and bloodless public-housing project. At its core are straight, car-free streets lined with simple townhouses and ground-floor-access flats in five-storey rows. In the alleyways behind – an imitation of the classic London backstreet, the mews – will be little two- and three-storey homes, all with direct access to the street. An interesting concept I think, lets hope they don’t approach the built environment with the same mad dash for the sameness of IKEA furniture and they create something awesome to behold!
Visualize traffic impacts – thanks to the germans

The other article is this incredibly cool visualization tool for ArcGIS to allow planners like us to visually see the impacts the increasing in traffic a new development may have! Pop on over to Fast.co Design to marvel at it!

Movie thursday might have fallen a bit to the wayside in the last few weeks but it’s back with a bang! First up we have Brendan Finn, who is a wonderful speaker, talking about Bus Rapid Transit and what it could do for your city in this case, Dublin. I first saw Brendan speak when I was doing my thesis at a CILT Event. I was blown away by the work on Buses with a high level of service, it formed quiet a significant part of the assumptions I made during my study as to the levels of service that could be provided on the orbital network. Brendan makes some key points about Dublin; NAMA will hold a awful lot of sway when it comes to future transit development and Dublin is completely lacking in terms of Orbital services (finally nice to see it recorded in a video!). So I urge you take a few minutes and watch the video below! Presentation Slides to follow along with. It’s been an exciting few weeks as regards planning in Ireland goes, with significant developments in terms of the Children’s Hospital being refused permission, the Mahon tribunal and the fallout associated with that and of course who could forget Phil Hogans amazingly well received Household charge.

I’m speaking at Dublinked

But that’s not the sort of news you want to hear is it? I thought not. I will be speaking alongside Martin Charlton, Richard Cantwell and Bruce Mc Cormack at an upcoming Dublinked Event – “Dublinked- IRLOGI Spatial Data”

I shall be chatting away about my experience of consuming the various open data sets that have been made available by the most wonderful folks in the Dublin Local authorities and of course the National Transport Authority. My experience had been building the UrbanRural – built on heritage web application to help you find your local built heritage without having to visit a myriad of organisations websites. The other piece I will be discussing is the mapping of the NaPTAN data from the National Transport Authority which was made available on this very blog here.

So if that sounds interesting to you or maybe you’d like to meet me in the flesh, AMAZING! You should come along on the 19th April @10:00 in Dun Laoghaire its FREE register your spot on the Event Page

We’re fast approaching the last week of February, and man it has flown by! It was an interesting week, with plenty of controversy including shock decision by Bord Pleanala to refuse permission for the Children’s Hospital on the Mater site. The real cost of rural living compared to urban living Frank McDonald penned an interesting article on how he believes the recent attention surrounding the septic tank charge, is in fact hiding the bigger issue at stake, that urban dwellers are cross subsidizing rural-dwellers. Development levies by local authorities reveal a different story. The average levy for a new house in the countryside amounts to €9,300, with no charge for sewerage, whereas the purchase price of a similar-sized house in an urban area would include a much higher levy of €28,650 – of which €5,350 is for sewerage New Irish Addresses I came across a very interesting tweet from Alice Charles of work done by James Nix on the spread of new rural addresses produced between 2005-2007.
Geography of Business

Next up is an amazing set of slides from Duncan Smith’s blog Urban Geographics. They show a general bias of offices conglomeration slightly to the west of central london. Well worth a look as he draws on transport models as a way to draw conclusions as to why some of the clustering has occurred.
